| The Alaskan wolf, also known as the Yukon wolf, was classified as Canis lupus pambasileus in 1905 by zoologist Daniel Elliot. It is one of the largest wolves in North America, if not the largest. Some believe it's just an extension of the Alaskan tundra wolf. They are distributed throughout Alaska and the Yukon, with the exception of the Arctic Coast tundra region. Alaskan wolves are generally darker in color, most often black or black mixed with either brown, gray or white. They are very large wolves, measuring from 1.5 to 2.15 m in length from the tip of the nose to the end of the tail. They are currently the largest wolves in North America and the world. They feed on caribou, moose, sheep, hares and ground squirrels. |
