The Gotland Hound is a sled dog used for hunting hare and fox. It can also be kept as a companion dog, provided its strong hunting instinct and high exercise needs are taken into account. Although of Swedish origin, it remains rare, even in Sweden.
The Gotland Hound is a Swedish breed that existed for a long time, primarily on the island of Gotland, but was only recently recognized as a breed. Today, it is found in the rest of Sweden, especially in the south. It was bred for its hunting abilities, not for beauty standards.

The Gotland Hound is very rare, with only a few litters per year. It is part of Sweden's cultural heritage, and its breed club actively works to preserve it. The breed is recognized by the Nordic Kennel Club (NKU), but not by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI).

This breed has a highly developed hunting instinct and is intended for hunting in forests and open fields. It requires a great deal of exercise, training, and mental stimulation. The Gotland Stövare has a short, reddish-yellow coat with white markings on the head, neck, chest, legs, and tail. The height at the withers is 48 to 56 cm for males and 44 to 52 cm for females. The weight is 16 to 23 kg for males and 15 to 20 kg for females. Because the breed was not selected for a uniform appearance, there is a wide variety of characteristics. Its coat is easy to care for, requiring only a bath.

The Gotland Stövare has a highly developed hunting instinct and is built for pursuing game during long days in the forest and on the plains. Affectionate and friendly, it knows how to relax when not hunting. It needs plenty of exercise and stimulation to stay in top condition. The Gotland Stövare is considered a robust breed of dog, without any specific diseases. Its life expectancy is 14 to 17 years.
