The Mongolian Xigou (or Menggu Xigou) is an ancient Chinese hunting dog, slender and athletic, renowned for its speed and loyalty in the hunt. Used for centuries by nomadic peoples, it is characterized by a narrow head, drooping ears, and a powerful yet lean build, ensuring endurance and speed. It requires a great deal of exercise and experienced handlers. Although some consider it a variety of Xigou (Chinese dog), it is distinct from the more widespread Chongqing dog. Prized for guarding, hunting, and as a symbol of heritage, it is now a rare breed. The Mongolian Xigou is an ancestral hunting breed recognized for its tenacity, exceptional sense of smell, and agility. It is a tall, slender dog with a robust and powerful build. Its thick coat protects it from bites when defending itself against predators or capturing large prey. The coat is usually white or yellow, but shades of blue, gray, and black are also possible. A slightly narrow head, drooping, folded ears, small, dark brown eyes, and slender legs are some of the Mongolian Xigou's main characteristics. It is an active and loyal dog, generally eager to please its owner. Possessing a fierce and protective instinct, it can be territorial, making it a good watchdog, but it can also be wary of strangers.
It is not advisable to let this dog off-leash in an unfenced area. The Mongolian Xigou has an extremely well-developed hunting instinct and may mistake domestic animals and other small creatures in the neighborhood for potential prey. Originating during the Liao Dynasty (907-1125), these swift sighthounds were favorites of the Khitan royal family. Nobles considered them excellent long-range hunters, watchdogs, and loyal companions. Historical records indicate that Genghis Khan took Mongolian Xigou with him on his travels to Europe, using these versatile dogs for protection and hunting. Experts believe the Mongolian Xigou descends from one of the oldest dog breeds, the Saluki. Once a leading hunting dog in northeastern Mongolia, this breed is now relatively rare. Mongolian Xigou are active dogs that need daily exercise to stay fit and healthy. Playing in a fenced yard and going for long walks, or even jogs, are excellent ways to channel their energy. These athletic dogs also excel in competitive activities, such as agility and rally. Loyal and hardworking, they are generally easy to train. Positive reinforcement methods, based on rewards and using treats and their favorite toys, often yield good results. Furthermore, socializing your puppy from a young age will help make them a well-behaved adult dog.
