The term "Jōmon dog" refers to the ancestral canine ancestor of modern Japanese breeds, including the Shiba Inu, which existed during the Jōmon period (over 10,000 years ago). Jōmon dogs were small, sturdy hunting companions, similar in size to modern Shibas, but with a flatter forehead, a narrower muzzle, and larger teeth. The term "Jōmon Shiba" refers to a specific breeding program aimed at recreating this ancient type, characterized by a more primitive, wolf-like appearance, a slender build, and a less pronounced stop (the hollow in the forehead) than modern Shibas. It is often described as the "fox-muzzled" type. This is one of the oldest canine lineages in East Asia, the origin of many indigenous Japanese breeds. Stocky body, erect ears, curled tail, but with distinctive cranial features (flat stop, narrow muzzle) compared to modern Shibas. Deeply integrated into Jōmon society, they were considered family members and sometimes buried with their owners. Later crossbred with immigrant dogs, it gave rise to modern Japanese breeds like the Shiba, with the Jōmon dog representing the original form. The Jōmon dog is a canine breed originating in the Japanese archipelago. Along with the Yayoi, it is the ancestor of Japanese dogs. Several theories exist regarding its origin, but specimens have been unearthed throughout the country, primarily in the Kantō region, dating from the beginning to the end of the Jōmon period. It generally has a robust build, and sexual dimorphism between males and females is more pronounced than in modern Japanese dogs. Different theories also exist regarding its use, particularly as a hunting dog.
