The Greek Greyhound is medium-sized, and its morphology is dictated by function rather than aesthetics. It is a hunter par excellence, using its exceptional sense of smell and high average speed to track and capture its prey. Its conformation is harmonious: athletic, robust, and of normal proportions, the Greek Greyhound is slightly longer than it is tall, with taut skin and a short, smooth coat. Its coat is primarily black with tan markings. Courageous, sociable, intelligent, and sometimes impatient, this sighthound is a passionate hunter, but never aggressive. Friendly, affectionate, and extremely playful, it is a happy and useful farm dog in many ways. Possessing a good sense of boundaries, it barks at strangers or danger and relentlessly pursues vermin.

Extremely brave and resourceful, it has the stamina and cunning to take on a wild boar. In its owner's presence, it is a cheerful and friendly companion, wagging its tail and living peacefully with other dogs. Traditionally, this breed hunts in pairs or small packs of three or four. They are surprisingly fast and powerful for their size. Although fundamentally good, it is an independent breed; young males are best raised by an experienced owner. Maturity is late, usually around two or three years of age.

The Greek Greyhound has a magnificent, powerful voice that carries for miles. It barks during the chase and is capable of galloping long distances, hunting alone if necessary before bringing the hare back to its master. This innate predisposition gives the breed a strong temperament and a certain stubbornness, especially when faced with an overly docile or passive master. These dogs take time to mature. Rough handling or a lack of proper training will worsen their behavior; they need careful training, patience, and understanding.
