The Pungsan dog, the largest and most robust of the native Korean dog breeds, resembles the Malamute or the Siberian Husky. Its coat can be white, reddish-brown, gray, black, or brindle. Once used for hunting tigers, deer, and wild boar, it takes its name from the mountainous county of Pungsan in the north of the country (present-day Kimhyonggwon), where the breed was originally developed. It is a very rare breed, virtually unknown outside of Korea. The Pungsan has a thick, usually white coat and is known for its distinctive bark. It has a curled tail and erect ears. Its coat, both fine and dense, allows it to withstand the harsh winters of the northern Korean Peninsula. The Pungsan is a widespread breed in Korea but uncommon elsewhere. Strong and agile, Pungsan dogs owe their longevity to their mountainous past. They are generally loyal to their owners and to people with whom they feel comfortable.
