Originally, the Shiba Inu Sanin consisted of two lines. The "Inaba dog" means "dog of the Tottori State." The Inaba (or "dog of the Tottori State") originated in Tottori Prefecture. The Sekishu (or "dog of the Tottori State") originated in Shimane Prefecture. However, they exhibited different characteristics.

With the number of Shiba Inu dogs having declined sharply before and after World War II, crossbreeding took place between the two remaining lines. This is how the Shiba Inu Sanin came about. The Inaba and Sekishu dogs retained some common characteristics, but the Sanin survived. Today, its population is very small: it is estimated that only about 250 individuals remain in all of Japan.

The term "Sekishu" refers to a historical regional line of the popular Shiba Inu, a small, agile Japanese hunting dog known for its bold, independent, yet loyal and affectionate nature with its family, though stubborn with strangers. It requires early socialization and consistent training; it is clean, has feline behavior, unique vocalizations (such as the "Shiba cry"), and a distinctive fox-like appearance with a curled tail.
