| Its origins are unknown. It is a rare hunting dog, long used by the former Hyuga clan. Although Miyazaki is home to many other local dog breeds, these are rare breeds, endemic to the region, and little information is available about them. The purebred Hyuga dog is still preserved in its birthplace. Almost all of these dogs are hunting dogs, sometimes crossbred with other local breeds. It resembles a typical dog from Kyushu and southern Japan, without any remarkable distinguishing features. It has erect ears, a pointed tail, and a smooth coat in various colors: white, red, brown, and brindle. Loyal, courageous, and tenacious, it is a true hunting dog, capable of facing wild boars without flinching. Many Japanese dog breeds from Miyazaki and Oita remain mysterious, and the true identity of most of them remains unknown. Indeed, hunters have continued to protect and pass on these breeds as high-performing hunting dogs, not for commercial purposes. However, their low profile also exposes them to a risk of extinction due to the declining number of hunters. |
