An ancient breed, the Yayoi is one of the two main ancestors of Japanese dog breeds. It descends from pariah-type dogs brought to Japan by immigrants before the Jōmon period. These dogs served their master's family by guarding houses and villages and working as hunting dogs. The arrival of the Yayoi led to crossbreeding and its gradual disappearance, but its genetic heritage is still strongly present in the Hokkaido Dog, the Ryukyu Dog, and the Shiba Inu. Its appearance has been reconstructed from the remains of Tobimaru and other animals unearthed during archaeological excavations. It is a pariah-type dog closely resembling primitive Japanese dogs, lacking superfluous features. It has long legs, a thick muzzle, a shallow stop, and fox-like eyes. Its ears are erect, and its tail is pointed. Its coat is harsh and short, and it is thought to have been black or brownish.
