The Tahitian Dog is an extinct Polynesian breed, similar to the Hawaiian Poï. It is recognizable by its small to medium size, broad head, smooth brown, white, or red coat, and erect ears. Once an important member of Tahitian society, it was valued as a companion dog and a source of food. Its vegetarian diet consisted of yams, poï, breadfruit, and coconuts. The breed became extinct due to crossbreeding with European dogs brought by explorers.

This dog's intelligence is not exceptional. It requires between 40 and 80 repetitions to learn and memorize new commands. The Tahitian Dog obeys the first command in only 30% of cases, or even less. If you are looking for an intelligent dog, it is therefore advisable to reconsider your choice. The Tahitian Dog is below average in canine intelligence. It is slightly more difficult to train than average and is not known for being easy to train. This breed needs more time and repetition to obey. Teaching it new commands is a challenge, but not impossible.

The Tahitian Dog is a good watchdog. Its primary role is to observe, and it is consistent in its work. It has a good voice and keen hearing. Generally territorial and protective of its territory, the Tahitian Dog will alert you if it senses anything unusual. It is an average guard dog. Some are very protective of their territory, while others are more open to allowing a stranger into it. This breed is not infallible in defending its territory in all circumstances.

It is a bit more sensitive than other dog breeds. Even mild punishment can affect it emotionally. The Tahitian Dog does not tolerate irregular daily routines, noisy homes, or frequent visitors well. It is sensitive to its owner's emotions and makes a wonderful companion. The Tahitian Dog has a stronger hunting instinct than other breeds. Cats and other small animals may be at risk. This is a natural instinct and does not necessarily mean that Tahitian Dogs are aggressive. It is best to keep this breed on a leash. Tahitian Dogs generally adapt quite well to changes in lifestyle and different environments.
