This breed is also known as			Westerwald Sheepdog Westerwald Cowdog

The Westerwald Mountain Dog is a rare and highly intelligent working breed originating from the Westerwald and Siegerland regions of Germany. It is bred exclusively for herding and managing livestock.
Its height at the withers ranges from 45 to 55 cm and its weight from 18 to 32 kg. Its coat is dense, medium-length, harsh or sometimes curly, generally brown, sandy, or with black markings.
It is independent, hardy, alert, and fiercely loyal to its owner. It possesses a powerful herding instinct that allows it to work independently.
Used for centuries by professional shepherds for herding large flocks in difficult terrain and in all weather conditions.
Considered one of the old German Shepherd Dogs (Altdeutsche Hütehunde), it is valued for its working abilities rather than its standardized physical appearance and is largely unknown to major kennel clubs.
The Gesellschaft zur Erhaltung alter und gefährdeter Haustierrassen (GEH), the German national association dedicated to the conservation of historical and endangered domestic animal breeds, classifies it as "critically endangered" on its Red List.
