| The Satsuma Inu is a rare, large, and powerful Japanese dog breed. It is an ancestor, now extinct or descended from crossbreeds, of modern fighting dogs like the Tosa Inu. Bred for hunting and fighting in the Satsuma region, it was a courageous, loyal dog renowned for its strength. It was often crossed with larger breeds like the Mastiff. Today, it has largely been assimilated into other breeds or is extinct, although some enthusiasts seek its characteristics in modern dogs like the Shikoku or the Tosa. The Satsuma Inu is a rare breed originating from the Kagoshima region of Japan. Medium-sized and short-haired, it was originally used for hunting.
