The dogs of the Sanyo region more closely resemble those of Kishu (Kumano) than those of Shikoku and Kyushu. There are two types: medium and small. They were primarily used as hunting and guard dogs. However, as the Sanyo region has been a crossroads of trade between East and West since ancient times, new cultures and trends spread rapidly. Tosa fighting dogs, terriers, bulldogs, and other breeds were used in dogfighting, and the Sanyo dog was subsequently neglected. Furthermore, the decline of deer and wild boar populations led to the demise of the Sanyo dog. Medium-sized dogs weighed approximately 4.5 to 5 kan (about 16.9 to 18.8 kg). As for the wild dogs, they weighed about 7 to 8 kan (approximately 26.3 to 30 kg), but their appearance was very dull. Their coats were brindled. The medium-sized dogs of Tawarayama were of better quality than those from other parts of Sanyo, but hunters showed little interest in them, and their quality gradually declined. The best medium-sized dogs found in the Sanyo region were imported. Small dogs, generally more agile than the medium-sized ones, were used for hunting small game, a practice that persisted for a time but has now disappeared.
