The Shaanxi Hound is an uncommon breed of sighthound originating in China. According to the Chinese Native Breed Conservation Club, this breed has existed for at least 2,500 years. These elegant, large dogs are likely the ancestors of sighthounds and Afghan Hounds. Bred for hunting, their bodies are streamlined for optimal speed. Calm on point, Shaanxi Hounds are independent and only respond to people they know and love most. These magnificent dogs make excellent watchdogs, loyal companions, and exceptional hunters. The Shaanxi Hound, often called the Xian Dog, is an ancient breed from China. Dogs resembling the Shaanxi Hound appear in artwork dating back to the Qin Dynasty, more than 2,500 years ago. The Chinese god Zhang Xian, who frequently takes the form of a dog, is the origin of the breed's name.

The Shaanxi Xigou (or Xian Dog) is an ancient and rare Chinese sighthound, renowned for its speed, stamina, and hunting prowess. Used by royalty and capable of guarding estates, the Xigou is independent and devoted. Its slender body, short coat, and long, narrow head give it a distinctive muzzle, often compared to that of a sheep. Athletic, it needs plenty of exercise, possesses a highly developed predatory instinct, and requires patient training despite its intelligence. It is an excellent companion, admittedly aloof, but versatile and an exceptional working dog. This majestic dog is a superb hunter, a reliable guardian, and a loyal companion. Noble, independent, and often reserved, it is devoted to its master but generally wary of strangers. In addition to being a talented hunter, it makes an excellent watchdog. The Xigou is an active dog that needs daily exercise to be happy and healthy. Running at full speed in a fenced garden and going for long walks on a leash are excellent ways for him to expend his energy. This athletic dog is also an ideal candidate for canine sports, such as agility or rally. These intelligent and independent dogs can be stubborn. However, regular training, based on positive reinforcement, usually yields good results.
