The Marwari Shepherd is an ancient and rare Indian sheepdog breed originating in Rajasthan. Born in the Marwar region of southwestern Rajasthan, it has been used since time immemorial by local people for herding sheep and goats. It is a medium to large-sized dog, robust, intelligent, and lively, whose presence remains limited to areas close to its origin and is less widespread than other breeds. Known for its loyalty, strength, and intelligence, it is often employed as a guardian of farms and properties. An excellent protector and independent, it is relatively unknown outside its region of origin. It takes its role as a guardian very seriously and proves to be an effective and devoted protector of livestock. As a sheepdog and guard dog, it is intelligent and requires an owner capable of providing consistent and respectful training. These dogs are generally intelligent, courageous, and devoted, much like the German Shepherd, Border Collie, Australian Cattle Dog, Icelandic Sheepdog, and many other herding breeds. The Marwari dog was developed to protect Marwari sheep, a breed that produces high-quality wool, from wild animals such as wolves and tigers.

Originally a hunting dog, it later became a herding dog for driving flocks of sheep and goats. Medium to large in size, this robust, courageous, athletic, and powerful dog was once used for dogfighting. Its bark is quite loud, but it doesn't bark excessively. Besides its country of origin, this breed is found in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. It is adapted to the climate of almost all regions of India, except for the snowy areas of the Himalayas. Intelligent, self-assured, and fearless, the Marwari Shepherd Dog is very protective and devoted to its owner and family. It is generally friendly with children and other pets, making it an excellent companion and watchdog. However, it is aloof with strangers and territorial dogs and can be aggressive towards other dogs. These dogs were bred as protection and guard dogs, and later local herders began using them for driving livestock. The Marwari Shepherd is an intelligent, affectionate, and devoted dog.

Vigilant, protective, courageous, and determined, it is very attached to its family. Reserved with strangers and potentially aggressive with other dogs, it requires early socialization and training. It gets along well with children and other pets and makes an excellent family pet. Independent and self-assured, the Marwari Shepherd requires less maintenance than many other dogs. It is perfectly adapted to the tropical Indian climate and acclimatizes quickly. This dog is suitable for first-time dog owners. However, it is territorial and can be aggressive towards other dogs; therefore, it is important to socialize and train it from a young age. Very energetic, it can live indoors provided its physical and mental exercise needs are met. On the other hand, a lack of exercise can make it stubborn and aggressive. It is an excellent hunting dog. Robust and energetic, it possesses very good speed and great stamina. These dogs are also capable of protecting livestock from large predators such as wolves, leopards, etc.
