The Alpine Mastiff was an ancient, giant working dog breed originating in the Swiss Alps, considered the ancestor of the modern Saint Bernard and a key factor in the development of the English Mastiff. Standing up to one meter tall at the shoulder and weighing over 90 kg, these powerful dogs were used by monks for search and rescue in the mountains and for protection against predators. However, the original breed was gradually altered by crossbreeding starting in the 1850s. Developed in the Swiss Alps, it was notably used by the monks of the Great St. Bernard Pass for the protection and rescue of travelers. Of colossal size, often exceeding 90 kg and measuring 76 cm at the shoulder, its powerful musculature was perfectly adapted to snowy environments. It was used as a guard dog against wolves, as a sled dog, and, above all, as a search and rescue dog in the snowy Alps.

The original type virtually disappeared in the 1850s after being crossbred with other breeds, such as the Newfoundland, to increase its size, giving rise to the modern Saint Bernard. These crosses are considered the direct ancestors of the modern Saint Bernard and heavily influenced the development of the English Mastiff. The term "Alpine Mastiff" was often used synonymously with the primitive Saint Bernard, although the original dog, with its finer coat, was an earlier and distinct version of the modern long-haired mountain dog. The Alpine Mastiff was renowned for its loyalty, gentleness, and even temperament.

Despite its large size, the breed was considered calm and composed, making it an excellent guardian without being overly aggressive.
