The term "Polynesian dog" does not refer to a single breed, but to several now-extinct breeds developed throughout Polynesia and descended from dogs brought by the first Polynesian settlers. These dogs, likely originating in Southeast Asia, spread throughout the Pacific and were an integral part of various Polynesian cultures before disappearing due to crossbreeding with European dogs. It is believed that the ancestors of Polynesian dogs came from Southeast Asia and were brought by the first Polynesian navigators who settled on the islands.

While dogs native to the islands were generally small or medium-sized, stray dogs can be any shape and size. Polynesian dogs typically had smooth, brown, white, or red coats. In contrast, the coats of modern stray dogs can display any combination of colors, patterns, and lengths. Free-roaming dogs do not conform to any breed standard; Therefore, there are no common characteristics that unite them. However, the Polynesian stray dog had a broad head, erect ears, small eyes, and a pointed muzzle. Stray dogs have learned to fend for themselves.
