The Toy Bulldog was a small, now-extinct British breed that existed in the 19th century. Typically weighing less than 9 kg, it was an ancestor of the French Bulldog. Today, "Toy Bulldogs" or Miniature Bulldogs are often modern crossbreeds, combining Bulldogs with Pugs or French Bulldogs to create friendly, compact companion dogs. However, they are not recognized by major kennel clubs. These dogs were renowned for their gentle nature towards all humans and their love of young children. Intelligent, easy to train, and loyal to their owners, they possessed endearing personalities and were great entertainers for families. The Toy Bulldog was a British variety of miniature or toy bulldog that appeared in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Not recognized as a breed, it is now extinct. This was a miniature version of the English Bulldog, resulting either from natural litters of small dogs from normal-sized parents or from systematic selective breeding to achieve a small size. A breed society, the Toy Bulldog Club, specified that the dogs should have the characteristics and conformation of the normal-sized bulldog, but with a weight not exceeding 9 kg (20 lb).
