he "Khoikhoi Hottentot dog" is not an officially recognized modern dog breed. It was an indigenous hunting dog used by the Khoikhoi people of southern Africa several centuries ago. It is widely considered an ancestor of the modern Rhodesian Ridgeback. Early European settlers crossed their own hunting dogs—such as mastiffs, bloodhounds, Great Danes, and greyhounds—with the indigenous Khoikhoi dogs to create a breed better suited to the African wilderness. The resulting dog, the Rhodesian Ridgeback, also known as the African Lion Dog, inherited the Khoikhoi dog's distinctive dorsal ridge, in which the hair grows in the opposite direction to the spine. Its appearance is described as jackal-like, with a short, mouse-colored coat. It possessed a unique dorsal ridge, a trait passed down to its descendants. Highly valued for its hunting skills and protective instincts, it was notably capable of keeping large predators like lions and leopards at bay until hunters arrived. Renowned for its courage, loyalty, and ability to withstand the harsh African climate.
