The Shiba Mino refers to a historical and regional variety of Shiba Inu originating from Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Recognizable by its dark red coat, thick ears, and sickle-shaped tail, it is distinguished from the modern Shiba by characteristics essential to its origins. This term can also refer to miniature versions, sometimes called "Mame Shiba," meaning "bean Shiba." The Shiba Mino is not a separate breed, but rather refers to one of the original Japanese Shiba Inu varieties (Mino, Sonnen, Shinshu) that were crossbred after World War II to create the modern Shiba Inu. The latter is known for its fox-like appearance, curled tail, double coat, alert temperament, and independent spirit. Originating in Japan, it was used as a small game hunting dog. Small, muscular, and intelligent, it is very attached to its family but can be aloof with strangers. Early socialization and regular training are therefore essential to channel its pronounced predatory instinct and its characteristic cry, the "Shiba cry." The Shiba Mino is a rare Japanese breed, closely related to the Shiba Inu, but originating from the Mino region. Renowned for its alertness, loyalty, and independence, this agile little dog typically lives between 12 and 16 years and thrives in active and experienced homes. The Mino Shiba is a variety of Shiba Inu originating from the Gifu Prefecture in Japan; with a magnificent dark red coat, it is extremely rare. There are only about 200 in Japan. As one of the oldest Shiba breeds, it is, in truth, as splendid as it is endangered, but I know that a movement exists in Japan for its preservation.
