Originating from Chichibu, this dog is said to be closely related to the Shinshu Shiba Inu. Legend has it that it descends from Canis lupus hodophilax. Long popular in its region of origin, it has now fallen out of favor. Although a purebred breed no longer exists, a few specimens remain. Larger than a typical Shiba Inu, its winter coat is particularly thick. Its physical characteristics are not reminiscent of the Japanese Shiba Inu: erect ears and a curled tail. At dog shows, it is presented as a Tokoto, with a reddish coat. Its temperament and social status remain unknown. The "Chichibu dog" likely refers to a local hunting dog from the Okuchichibu region of Japan. Medium-sized, it has a sesame brown or black coat, a curled tail, and is used for boar hunting. Closely related to native Japanese breeds like the Shiba Inu and Kawakami Inu, it is renowned for its hardiness, vigor, and loyalty, and is deeply rooted in regional traditions. While not a distinct modern breed, these dogs embody the robust spirit of native Japanese hunting dogs, sharing characteristics with the Shiba Inu but reflecting local variations.
