The Higo Wolfdog is an unrecognized, historically rare, and even extinct dog breed originating from Higo Province (present-day Kumamoto Prefecture) in Japan.
It is not recognized as a native Japanese breed (Nihon-ken) by major conservation organizations such as the Nihon-ken Hozon Kyokai (NIPPO).
"Higo" refers to the historical province, while "Rou Ken" roughly translates to "wolfdog."
It should not be confused with the famous Japanese pocket knife, the Higonokami, or with modern wolfdog hybrids.
