The Kemmer Feist originates from the Southern United States. Developed by Robert Kemmer, it was initially designed as a specialized and hardy hunting dog, particularly suited to hunting small game such as squirrels. Resulting from a cross between Mountain Curs, Old Timey Mountain Feists, and Fox Terriers, it was selected for its waterfowl hunting abilities, especially flushing out waterfowl. The Kemmer Feist is a small to medium-sized (30-45 cm, 6-14 kg) American specialist hunting dog, developed by Robert Kemmer, often using Mountain Curs, Fox Terriers, and other Feist bloodlines. Renowned for its exceptional squirrel-hunting abilities, it is very active, agile, and intelligent, with a highly developed sense of smell and a short, easy-to-care-for coat.

The Kemmer Feist can live in an apartment provided it gets enough daily exercise. Quite active indoors, it needs a small to medium-sized garden. Kemmer Feists love to dig and can escape from a fenced garden fairly easily. With proper protection, they can spend long hours outdoors. They enjoy playing both indoors and outdoors. Feists were bred to be small, lively hunting dogs, specializing in small game. Kemmers were developed for their exceptional sense of smell. They are arboreal dogs, instinctively driving small game into trees and ensuring it stays there until the hunter arrives.

These dogs can resemble the Rat Terrier, with their long muzzle and triangular, drooping ears. Their short coat is usually tricolor (black, brown, and white) or bicolor (brown and white), but it can also be yellowish or cream. These are active, energetic, and robust dogs. They have a good life expectancy and are relatively easy to train. They are known for being friendly and sociable. Kemmer Feists are excellent hunting dogs and wonderful companions for the whole family. They are affectionate and loyal dogs who enjoy the company of their family and generally get along well with most people.

Although active, they are also considered calmer than most other terriers. These dogs are very intelligent, sociable, and friendly with strangers. This also means they are not necessarily good guard dogs. By nature, they are sociable and do not tolerate prolonged solitude well; therefore, it is advisable to consider having another dog for company if you are often away. Kemmer Feists make excellent family dogs. Their playful nature makes them wonderful companions for children of all ages. However, it is important to teach your children to be respectful and gentle with all dogs. The younger the child, the more supervision is required.
