The Amagi dog is a rare local breed of dog, originating from the Amami Islands (Kagoshima Prefecture), now considered extinct. It is not recognized by major kennel clubs such as the American Kennel Club (AKC) or the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). Origin: Amami Islands, Japan (Shizuoka Prefecture is also mentioned). Considered extinct or extremely rare, it once existed only in certain areas. Historically used as a boar hunting dog. It is not an officially standardized or internationally recognized breed. Due to its likely extinction as a distinct local breed, detailed and standardized information on its characteristics and temperament is limited. Available information suggests it was a Spitz-type dog, related to other native Japanese breeds and potentially an ancestor of the Akita Inu. The six best-known and officially recognized native Japanese dog breeds are the Shiba Inu, Akita Ken, Hokkaido Ken, Kai Ken, Kishu Ken, and Shikoku Ken. The Amagi, however, does not belong to any of these standardized breeds.
