The Sarail Dog, also known as the Bengal Greyhound or Soriala Greyhound, is a rare breed of sighthound originating in Bangladesh and parts of West Bengal, India. Found primarily in the Brahmanbaria district of the Sarail upazila, it is considered the only native dog breed of Bangladesh. The Soriala Hound is a sighthound native to West Bengal, India. It is also known as the Sarail Dog in Bangladesh and the Bengal Hound in West Bengal, India. This dog is related to the Rampur Hound, which originated in the city of Rampur in northern India, located between Delhi and Bareilly. The Soriala Greyhound originated from the crossbreeding of very powerful and athletic dog lines, possessing robust jaws and a broad, solid skull. A Soriala Greyhound can bring down a bull, but it also hunts vermin, deer, and jackals. They are threatened with extinction, and very few Sorialas remain. This breed is known for its gentle and affectionate nature, which, combined with its elegance and speed, makes it very popular. It is a gentle, intelligent, and easy-to-train dog, demonstrating vigilance and boldness, and can sometimes be fierce enough to chase large animals.

It is a unique sighthound with an exceptional hunting instinct. Like all sighthounds, its main hunting assets are keen eyesight, great strength, and remarkable speed. Highly accurate, it is said to be capable of bringing down a rabbit in mid-flight. It can also hunt larger animals without difficulty. The Soriala is a hardy and energetic dog with a highly developed prey drive. These dogs are not only excellent hunters but also very loyal companions. They are not excessively affectionate like some other breeds, but they deeply love their family and are very protective of them. The Sarail Hound is an active and energetic dog that will love to accompany you on all your outdoor adventures. It is also known for its tolerance and gentleness with children, but it is obviously imperative never to leave a dog, regardless of breed, unattended with a very young child. The Sarail Hound is generally very vigilant and wary of strangers.

Therefore, it is an excellent guard dog, capable of being trained to effectively protect property. This dog tends to be territorial, and it can sometimes take time for a stranger to trust it. This breed is best suited to experienced owners with the time to train, socialize, and exercise it. Due to its boundless energy, strength, and strong prey drive, I do not recommend this dog for novices. It needs an experienced, patient, and consistent owner. Unfortunately, although once very popular, the Sarail Hound is now endangered. It is estimated that only a few hundred purebred Sarail Hounds remain. But some passionate breeders, like the Rabidas brothers, are working to save and revive the breed. Let's hope they succeed and that the number of these legendary dogs will increase again.
