The Ramanathapuram Mandai is an ancient local breed of dog from South India, originating in Tamil Nadu. It is recognizable by its distinctive large head, thick tail, and exceptional guarding abilities. Primarily used for hunting and protecting livestock ("Mandhai"), this fearless and loyal dog is highly territorial, making it an excellent, disciplined, and independent guard dog for farms and homes. Taking its name from the Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu, this guard dog is deeply rooted in art, culture, and collective memory. It is notably depicted in magnificent temple sculptures. This hunting dog is large and strong and has an average lifespan of 19 years. Its short coat comes in several colors, including black, white, gray, fawn, bluish, and multicolored. Fearless and fiercely protective, it is very aggressive towards strangers and suspected thieves, while remaining devoted to its owner. Traditionally used in the Ramanathapuram region for herding livestock ("Kedai/Mandhai" in Tamil) and hunting, its ancestors were used in warfare.

Although it shares similarities with other hunting dogs of South India, the Ramanathapuram Mandai is considered a distinct, robust local breed, often used for protecting and herding sheep and cattle. It is frequently employed as a guard dog to protect the population from wild animals and nighttime robberies. Its intelligence allows it to manage flocks of sheep and guide them safely. The Mandai has very powerful jaws, a deep and broad chest, and drooping ears. This dog is very active and spirited, but also fiercely protective of its owner. It is extremely territorial and aggressive towards unfamiliar dogs or other animals. The Mandai is known for fighting intruders, human or animal, to the death. It is also renowned for its loyalty to its owner and makes an excellent guard dog. Primarily a working dog, it is also a very strong and courageous breed that has been used in dogfighting. It barks more than many other dogs; therefore, bark training is necessary from a young age. Due to their excessive barking, reserved nature, and moderate exercise needs, Mandai are not considered suitable for apartment living.

Mandai are reserved and aloof dogs that are not fond of strangers but get along well with children. Highly territorial, they dislike the presence of other dogs in their territory. Mandai can be aggressive towards other dogs, sometimes even those they grew up with. Early socialization and training are essential. Quite dominant, Mandai dogs are not recommended for inexperienced owners or first-time dog owners. A dominant and reserved breed, the Mandai is very protective of its family and livestock, and this protective nature can make it aggressive towards strangers. Furthermore, its territorial instinct can manifest as aggression towards other dogs. Originally bred as livestock guardians and hunting companions, Mandai dogs demonstrate a great talent for hunting. Well-trained and socialized from a young age, Mandai dogs make excellent companions and watchdogs.
