Also known as the Black Terrier, the Old English Terrier is divided into two distinct types: the Smooth Terrier and the Wire Terrier. The Wire Terrier was the first of the two types to be developed, and its origins are believed to date back to the 17th century. The Smooth Terrier was obtained later by crossing Black Wire Terriers with English Smooth-coated breeds. Unfortunately, little is known about the temperament and history of this breed. It is poorly documented. The Old English Terrier, or Black and Tan Terrier, was a British working dog of the 17th and 18th centuries, likely the ancestor of modern breeds such as the Welsh Terrier and the Fox Terrier.

Developed for pest control and hunting, it was tenacious, energetic, and exhibited a wide variation in coat (wire or smooth) and size. It is considered extinct, having been incorporated into modern terrier breeds. The Old English Terrier is a lively and active breed that loves to play and explore. It is renowned for its boundless energy, intelligence, and loyalty to its family. This breed is not recommended for first-time dog owners, as it requires an experienced and patient owner who can provide proper training and socialization.

The Old English Terrier is also known for its protective instincts and can be wary of strangers. However, with proper training and socialization, it can learn to be friendly and tolerant of new people and other animals. The Old English Terrier is an intelligent and alert dog. As with all dogs, early positive reinforcement training and socialization are essential. This terrier is a working dog with a highly developed prey drive. It will consider small animals as prey and will not get along well with small pets. Affectionate with its family, it needs plenty of exercise and may not be happy in an apartment.
