The Chuandong Hound is an ancient, medium-sized breed originating from Sichuan. Renowned for its loyalty, intelligence, and feline temperament, it has a reddish-brown coat, erect ears, and often a blue-spotted tongue. Historically used for hunting, it is an excellent companion, gentle with families, requiring moderate exercise, high intelligence, and strong energy, necessitating regular training. It differs from the shorter-muzzled Chongqing Hound in its more working-oriented profile. The Chuandong Hound is noble, loyal, courageous, alert, intelligent, and dignified. It gets along well with respectful children but can be aloof with unfamiliar dogs. Proper training and good communication between dog and human will resolve this issue. It is important to properly socialize this working dog from a young age with other dogs and pets.

It makes an excellent companion. The Chuandong Hound is fearless, powerful, and muscular, robust and active, with an excellent jumping ability. Historically, it was used for hunting. The Chuandong Hound is a natural watchdog with a strong instinct, but it is not suited for competitions or police work. In its owner's absence and when faced with a stranger, it becomes extra vigilant and makes itself known. If its owner is present and it perceives the stranger as friendly, it lowers its guard, even after its owner has left. Independent, it may be somewhat aloof with strangers at first, but it is extremely devoted to its family. The Chuandong Hound is noble, loyal, courageous, alert, and intelligent. Respectful of children (never aggressive), it is reserved with dogs it doesn't know. Fearless, powerful, and muscular, robust and active, the Chuandong Hound possesses excellent jumping abilities. Formerly used for hunting, it is still sometimes used today, though less frequently than before. A natural watchdog with a strong instinct, it is not suited to canine sports. In the absence of its owner and when faced with a stranger, the Chuandong Hound becomes extra vigilant and makes itself known. If its owner is present and observes the stranger's friendliness, they will lower their guard even after their owner has left.

Independent, they may initially appear somewhat aloof towards strangers, but they are extremely devoted to their family. A natural breed that has evolved over time, the Chuandong Hound possesses highly developed instincts and requires a strong owner. It needs a calm but firm, self-assured owner who is consistent in enforcing the rules. The Chuandong Hound descends from the Chongqing Dog, an ancient Chinese breed whose origins are believed to date back to the Han Dynasty. Originating in Chongqing, in southwest China, the Chongqing Dog was once divided into two types: the Chuandong Hound and the Chongqing Dog. Although not the same breed, they share common ancestors and are both commonly referred to as Chongqing Dogs. The Chuandong Hound has a longer muzzle and is used for mountain hunting. The Chuandong Hound is sometimes used for home protection; it is a good working dog and an excellent family companion.
