Probably not completely extinct. This is a rare hunting dog, long used by the ancient Hyuga clan. Although many terrier-type dogs also exist, besides the Miyazaki, these two breeds are extremely rare, and data about them is almost nonexistent. The purebred Hinata dog is now protected in its region of origin. It is a true hunting dog, resulting from crossbreeding with other terrier breeds. It exhibits the typical characteristics of a terrier-type dog from southern Kyushu: a short, smooth tail, erect ears, and a coat that can be white, red, brown, etc. Loyal, courageous, and tenacious, it is a true hunting dog, capable of facing even a wild boar without flinching.
