Serengeti

Translation

Origin
The Serengeti is a cat breed originally from the United States.
This medium-sized cat is characterized by a physique similar to that of the Serval.

A brief historical overview

The Serengeti is a relatively recent breed, still in full development. The aim was to create a domestic cat breed as similar as possible to the Serval, but without resorting to hybridization. This was achieved by crossing a Bengal father (a hybrid between a cat and a Bengal Leopard Cat) and an Oriental mother.
It was recognized in 2001 by TICA and is also recognized by LOOF as a “new breed” and cannot compete for titles in shows.

Behavior / characteristics

The Serengeti is described as a good hunter, like its Leopard ancestors. It is said to make a cry (grunts and sighs) that distinguishes it from other cats when in a hunting stance. The Serengeti is not thought to be wild, due to the temperament of its maternal side, the Oriental cat breed. It is described as generally very affectionate with humans and meows a lot with a very powerful voice. However, these traits are entirely individual and depend above all on the history of each cat.

Head

Cranial region

Head
The head may appear small compared to the rest of the body. It forms a rounded triangle. The Serengeti's profile has no curves, and the forehead and nose are straight.

Facial region

Nose
To maintain the “wild” look, the nose is thick and brick-colored, with black around it.
Eyes
The eyes are large and round, with a color between yellow and copper, but preferably golden. Green is tolerated.
Ears
The ears are very large and conical, with a rounded tip and a wide, open base. They are close together on the head and are an important feature of the Serengeti's appearance. Between the ears on the top of the head, it's important to distinguish the shape of a Scarab Beetle, unlike the Bengal, which forms a kind of large M.

Body

Generality
The Serengeti is a medium-sized cat with a long, muscular body.
Back
Straight back.

Tail

Fairly thick, medium-sized, although in proportion to the body it appears short.

Limbs

The legs are long but solid, both muscular and boned.

Forequarters

Hindquarters

Feet

The feet are round and medium-sized. When the cat walks, its shoulder blades can be seen moving.

Coat

Coat and texture
The coat is short, soft and thick. The Serengeti tabby's coat is pale gray or beige, spotted with black or dark brown. The only coat permitted is spotted tabby, without ticking. Permitted colors are black and brown. There are also silver and smoked Serengeti. In this case, the silver subjects have a light coat, which makes the spots stand out even more.
