I dedicate this poem to Inoit, a much-lamented dog.
I found you, one noon,
Looking sad and thin,
I went out,
You were gone,
I waited for you.
You came back at last,
My hand, you licked,
And friends we became.
Your master beat you,
He didn't want you anymore,
You never barked,
Not even to show your joy,
He decided to euthanize you.
You weren't very old,
You had just made beautiful babies,
But they were all stolen,
A man saved you from the syringe,
But you escaped,
To find your beloved master,
Even if he was crazy,
Just like that,
You ended up in my home,
My father didn't want to keep you,
And for me, abandoning you was out of the question,
At my door, all night long you screamed,
My tears quickly flowed,
Why did I tie you to me? Why wasn't I near you?
The next day my eyes opened,
I ran to the window,
A smile spread across my face,
You could have sent me away,
When I came out,
You looked at me, full of hope,
I came to see you,
You wanted to stay my friend,
A year later,
My little Inoit,
You left us,
I was full of despair,
Your last breath was breathed without me,
I wanted to take you in my arms,
One last time,
So that you could see that I cared for you,
But I know, deep inside,
You thought of me,
And that you knew I loved you,
I know that, if you were to come back, you'd forgive me,
For eight years, you were beaten...
For a year, you lived...
At nine, you died...
And for a long time, you will be in my heart.
