The Northern Rocky Mountain wolf was classified as a subspecies of gray wolf Canis lupus irremotus in 1937 by senior biologist Edward A. Goldman.

Its original habitat extended from the Northern Rocky Mountains to southern Alberta in Canada.

The Northern Rocky Mountain Wolf is a light-colored wolf of medium to large size, averaging 38 to 52 kg. The largest found on the album was 66 kg.

Bison made up a large part of its diet until the bison herds were wiped out. So, when wolves were forced to turn to livestock for food, they were deliberately driven to extinction.

It was removed from the federal endangered species list in 2008.
