Given its low population, only with presence in specific areas of Andalusia, and presenting a black or chocolate coat tan, also called Orita coat, this podenco breed was rejected when Standard Podenco Andaluz was created, which could be a fatal result for this specific dog.

This fact of the standard's sidelining would lead to the breed's extinction were it not for the fans and efforts of certain hunters who never abandoned its particular value in rabbit hunting and its versatility when changing the course of the shotgun to other hunting parts.

These same hunters, who always had these dogs in their fields and hunting grounds, disagreed with this decision, and went on to keep them for hunting and breeding as their greatest treasures.

After a few years, a group of hunters got together to fight for the recognition and value of these hounds, so the National Association of Spanish Podenco Orito was created to unite forces and bring this canine much merit. This union and effort was recently received, and finally in October 2012, the Spanish Royal Canine Society approved the Spanish Orito Association as an authorized club, to be included as an ethnic group. The next step will be future official recognition of the breed, as the Spanish Orito, our breed, as indigenous to Spanish fields.

Recommended for podenqueros with previous experience and knowledge of the dog in general to get all the good that this kind of podenco carries in the genes.

He treated by expert hands is a trainable, intelligent, noble, medium-sized dog, born to hunt with an extraordinary sense of smell, and very resistant to fatigue, not afraid of anything, with a primitive look, little artificial, perfectly proportioned.

A strong character, he transgresses the hunting terrain by temperament, yet displays himself very sociable and affectionate, persevering tenaciously in hunting work, carefully tracing all the entrails of Cazadero, and relentlessly chasing the rabbit race. He is the best in brambles and streams after the rabicorto and an excellent collector, also standing out for being a very hardy dog in long days of hunting, loyal and submissive to the master.
