A brief presentation of the Patterland |
| The result of crossing a Lakeland Terrier with a Patterdale Terrier is a strong little dog with a confident nature and devoted temperament. As expected, the Patterland breed has all the characteristics of the Terrier family, they are quick on their feet, will chase anything that moves and have a stubbornness that requires a strong owner to overcome. Fiery, fearless and courageous, they won't look for a fight, but if it comes their way, they won't back down. This tough little dog also has his gentle side, loves human interaction and will want to be with you all the time. It's not a dog to be left alone as it gets bored and makes mischief if abandoned, so if you can't be there for this dog, it may not be the one for you. The Patterland is a good family dog, an excellent companion for children, and if raised with other pets, it can bond with them and get on well, but keep an eye on their interactions in case instinct comes into play. It's very important to socialize this dog to get their best qualities. All in all, the Patterland Terrier is a charming dog, tough but friendly on the outside with a gentle, affectionate center. |

| The Patterdale Terrier first appeared around the 1960s, bred by Brian Nuttall from dogs given to him by his grandfather. The breed has been hailed as one of the best in the country. Developed in the Lake District where foxes were a problem in a harsh environment, farmers needed a sturdy dog capable of hunting prey and even attacking it if it turned to fight. These were fast, tough and reliable dogs. They have a unique ability to compress their chest, enabling them to penetrate small burrows and holes. They can also lie flat on their stomachs with their legs fully extended, helping them to reach prey that has fallen to the ground. Considered “tough as nails”, these dogs excelled at their job and made formidable hunting dogs. Today, the Patterdale Terrier is a companion dog, and its temperament has softened thanks to recent breeding. Their good looks, gentle, devoted nature and lively, alert manner make them a popular companion and friend. | ||

| The Lakeland Terrier dates back to the 1800s, making it one of the oldest Terrier breeds still around today. Similar to the Patterdale Terrier, it was developed by crossing the Bedlington Terrier with the Old English Wirehair Terrier. It originated in England's Lake District and was a working dog used to hunt foxes, badgers and otters and prevent vermin from destroying crops. Renowned for their agility, they could hunt over rough terrain, in woods, fields and even in water. Although it's not known when the Lakeland Terrier arrived in the United States of America, it was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1934 and is still used today for hunting, tracking and as a loyal, devoted companion. | ||

| Well-proportioned bodies give the Patterland Terrier a balanced appearance and highlight its strong musculature. The thick, muscular chest and neck support a solid head, which is almost wedge-shaped and supports broad, triangular ears that fold back at the top. The muzzle is strong and broad, with teeth that have a well-defined scissor bite. Patterlands have bright, sparkling eyes that miss nothing, often black, brown or hazel. They have strong legs that can accelerate from a standing position to a run in seconds. Patterland coats can be smooth, rough or stiff, depending on the genetic gifts of the parent dogs. With a wide range of attractive colors and minimal maintenance, this small but handsome dog is a good choice for the strong, experienced owner. |
Temperament of the Patterland |
| Lively, alert, confident and courageous is the best description of the Patterland Dog. This hybrid breed is small and muscular, well proportioned and looks tough in a friendly way. They are best suited to experienced owners or an active family, as they have plenty of energy and, like all Terriers, have a strong instinct for hunting small, fast-moving animals. Patterlands have a stubborn streak and can benefit from a gentle owner. A pack leader, owner, firm but fair is what is needed to bring out the best characteristics of this dog. They adore children and can be devoted companions and playmates. The Patterland is easy to train as long as you keep it fun and stimulating. If training becomes boring for your dog, he'll switch off and do what he wants, leaving you frustrated and exasperated. With the amount of energy these dogs possess, they need regular daily exercise and training to stay mentally stimulated. Once these needs are met, the Patterland dog becomes an extremely loyal and devoted companion. They are an excellent choice of dog for those who lead active lifestyles, and need a minimum of grooming to keep them at their best. Their outgoing personality and Terrier traits make them excellent in all kinds of dog-related sporting activities. Surprisingly, these tough little dogs also have a gentle side and don't like to be left alone for long. With a strong leader they can respect, these dogs are a pleasure to own and will integrate into family life without hesitation. Apartment living is not ideal for this breed, as they can be vocal and have too much energy for a small unit. |
Needs and activities of the Patterland |
| Medium to high energy is normal for the Patterland dog, and they need daily exercise and plenty of activity throughout the day to bring out the best in themselves. They'll enthusiastically join you for a walk or a run, content to be outside for as long as you like. It's a good idea to keep them on a leash, though, as Patterland Terriers have a strong hunting instinct. When they see something intriguing, they move like lightning and can be gone in seconds, ignoring all your requests to return. They do best in a home with a secure yard to explore and patrol. Games are welcome, and they'll happily play for hours. The Patterland is ideal for agility and competitive dog sports, they have the drive and energy to finish the course in true enthusiastic style. |
Maintenance of the Patterland |
| The Patterland has minimal grooming requirements, having a short, smooth or rough coat with a dense undercoat. If your dog inherits the Lakeland Terrier coat, he may require his coat to be plucked twice a year to remove old hair. Otherwise, a good brushing with a firm brush or comb once a week should suffice. While you have your dog's attention, check his ears for any build-up of dirt that could promote inflammation. This is also a good time to brush your dog's teeth and trim his nails. Bathe your Patterland only when necessary, and use a dog shampoo designed for his skin, which will protect the skin's natural oils. Once grooming is complete, your Patterland is most likely to explode from your hands and run around showing off how beautiful he is and how much energy he has. |
