A brief presentation of the Mini Scottish Fox Terrier

If you like small Terriers, then you'll love the Mini Scottish Fox Terrier. It's a hybrid of the Scottish Terrier and the Miniature Fox Terrier. They're both small dogs, so the Mini Scottish Fox Terrier won't exceed 28 centimeters in height and should weigh less than 7 kilos. Miniature Terriers have dense, stiff coats that are flat and hard. It can be short, like the Fox Terrier, or longer, like the Scottish Terrier. Their coloring is white with black, brown or brindle accents, although some dogs can also be red or cream. An alert, energetic breed, Mini Scottish Fox Terriers are excellent watchdogs and pets.

History of the Mini Scottish Fox Terrier

Your Mini Scottish Fox Terrier is a hybrid that has only been around for about 20 years, so its history is not well known. However, by looking at the background of the parent breeds, you can get an idea of your dog's characteristics.

A little of the Scottish Terrier

The Scottish Terrier originated in Scotland in the 17th century from the West Highland White Terrier, the Cairn Terrier and the Skye Terrier. The breed is renowned for its ability and bravery in hunting foxes and badgers. In fact, they became famous for their role in the Battle of the Royal Scots, and the Terrier group was dubbed Dumbarton's Diehards by George Douglas, the first Earl of Dumbarton. In addition, President Franklin D. Roosevelt owned a Scottish Terrier named Fala, who received more fan mail than most presidents. Scottish Terriers were officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885 and are the 58th most popular dog breed.

A little of the Miniature Fox Terrier

The Miniature Fox Terrier is a combination of several different Terriers and the Whippet. Some of the Terriers that would have been used in the development of this breed are the Toy Fox Terrier, Toy Manchester Terrier, British Fox Terrier and English Toy Terrier. They originated in Australia in the 19th century and became popular for hunting rats, mice and snakes. The Miniature Fox Terrier is now a popular pet, owned by celebrities such as Tony Field of the Wiggles and Olympic athlete Ian Thorpe. The breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, but has been part of the United Kennel Club since 1936.

Appearance of the Mini Scottish Fox Terrier

Mini Scottish Fox Terriers are small and wiry, with dark brown eyes and a black or brown nose on a large, square muzzle. They generally weigh between 2.5 and 7 kilos and average 20.5 to 30.5 centimeters in height. The length of your dog's coat depends on parentage, but they generally have short to medium-length stiff coats that are white with black, brown, white, brindle or red accents. They may have a beard like the Scottish Terrier, they have short legs and a long tail that generally stands straight when not wagging.

Temperament of the Mini Scottish Fox Terrier

Your Mini Scottish Fox Terrier is an excellent, courageous watchdog that will protect you and your family from anything they consider a threat. He's cheerful and energetic, with plenty of spirit and drive, and will make you laugh with his antics. Training must be rigid and strict so that he knows he's not the boss, as these little dogs are susceptible to the Napoleon complex. They need to be socialized as puppies so that they are at ease with pets and children. They are, however, very intelligent and can learn anything you want to teach them. The Mini Scottish Fox Terrier is good with children, but you need to supervise them carefully.

Needs and activities of the Mini Scottish Fox Terrier

These little Terriers are full of energy and need at least one to one-and-a-half hours of vigorous exercise every day to keep them from becoming anxious. Dogs that don't get enough exercise usually end up with behavioral problems such as barking at everything, chewing your stuff and even being aggressive. The Mini Scottish Fox Terrier has hunting in his blood and would spend a few hours chasing birds and squirrels in the yard or park every day. A trip to the dog park, a day at the beach or a brisk walk would also be good exercise.

Maintenance of the Mini Scottish Fox Terrier

Your Mini Scottish Fox Terrier's coat should be stripped every 8 to 10 weeks to get rid of dead hairs. This can be done with a stripping blade or by hand. They should also be brushed with a smooth brush at least once a week to keep them from falling out and improve circulation for healthy skin. We also recommend cleaning your dog's ears with a soft cloth every week or so. In addition, your dog's nails should be trimmed every month to prevent them from cracking or ingrowing. Finally, brushing your dog's teeth with a special dog toothpaste every day will help prevent dental problems.
