A brief presentation of the Lab Pei |
| An independent and loyal companion, the Lab Pei is a medium to large breed dog, a hybrid of the Labrador Retriever and the Shar Pei. The history of these hybrids remains something of a mystery, as the sudden rise and popularity of creating specific crosses has only become apparent in the last 20 years. Nevertheless, we can assume that the hybrid may have originated around the year 2000, probably in North America. The Lab Pei is considered a low-maintenance dog, requiring very little grooming. These dogs are often described as lively, naughty breeds and are therefore not recommended for homes with young children. The Lab-Pei is a strong breed that often has a very muscular, compact physique. They are moderately active dogs that rarely bark. They are well suited to an apartment or urban lifestyle. |

| The Shar Pei is an ancient medium-sized dog first spotted in southern China over 2,000 years ago. During the Han Dynasty, the Shar Pei served primarily as a versatile breed that worked in fields, farms and palaces, often participating in activities such as hunting, herding and guarding. Unfortunately, these dogs were hunted and killed to near extinction with the creation of the People's Republic of China, because the Communist parties believed that dog ownership was considered an influence from the Western world. | ||

| The Lab Pei is a solid, compact breed. They can be medium-sized, but don't let their small stature fool you, as they are designed to be solid. The Lab Pei generally has a very short, dense coat that can be water-resistant, a trait they inherit from their Labrador lineage. These hybrids don't tend to be heavily wrinkled like their Shar Pei parent, but they will have very light folds and wrinkles around their foreheads. The Lab-Pei will have small, dark almond-shaped eyes that look alert. The ears are set high on the head and are semi-pricked downwards, with a pointed tip. Their skulls are broad and domed, while their muzzle tends to be of medium length. These breeds have very broad shoulders, deep, heavy chests and strong limbs. Tails are set high, strong and semi-curved. |

| The Lab Pei is an excellent family companion for owners looking for an independent but playful dog. This hybrid tends to have a very loyal and protective nature, making it an excellent guard and protection dog. However, because of this protective nature, they may not take well to other dogs and strangers. The Lab-Pei will also not tolerate rough or dirty hands. They are not recommended for homes with young children and will do best with older children. If you're considering getting a Lab Pei, expect to spend a lot of time on obedience training. These dogs can become quite possessive and dominant, so they're best suited to an experienced owner. Although these hybrids may not work well with children and other pets, it's important to remember that socialization at the puppy stage will help them become more friendly and tolerant of others. Lab Peis are a medium-energy breed, which means they don't need a lot of exercise and running to satisfy their energy needs. On average, they'll be quite content with 60 minutes of physical activity a day. These are dogs who can enjoy activities such as playing ball, swimming, short runs or long walks, hiking and playing with their owners or other dogs. After a few walks and playtime, you can expect your Lab Pei to simply relax and lie at your feet. |

| The Lab Pei is considered a medium-to-low-maintenance breed, as it doesn't require intensive grooming. This hybrid is not hypoallergenic and can be very slobbery. You may need to keep a few anti-slobber rags on hand. The Lab-Pei requires monthly brushing to remove debris and loose fur and distribute natural oils. If your hybrid tends to have more wrinkles and folds on the skin, it's essential that these are cleaned regularly to prevent the build-up of bacteria and yeast. Bathing should be done as needed, however, it is strongly recommended that owners properly wipe their hybrid with a damp cloth, paying particular attention to skin folds, foot pads, anal region and eye area. As with all dogs, regular tooth brushing is essential to maintain good oral hygiene and prevent dental disease. Ears should be cleaned and checked regularly for signs of infection, and nails should be trimmed if not worn. |
