A brief presentation of the Ewokian |
| Small and gentle, these sweet, teddy bear-like dogs are always a hit with young children and make wonderful pets. They are an adorable cross between the Havanese and the Spitz Toy / Pomeranian. Highly adapted to social life, they are highly dependent on their owners and are one of the least independent dogs in the world, often labeled Velcro dogs like their Havanese parent. With pint-sized dogs standing no taller than 27 centimetres, those looking for a small companion requiring little space should look no further. These little dogs also make excellent indoor pets, as they don't shed much and have fairly low exercise requirements. Their lush coats come in many different colors and only serve to add to their charm. |
History of the Ewokian |
| Although the Ewokian's name may seem a little unusual given that its parents are named Havanese and Spitz Toy / Pomeranian, any Star Wars fan will be quick to educate those who aren't aware that an Ewok is a small hunter from the Star Wars world that resembles a gray teddy bear or, in this case, a hybrid dog breed. Although Ewokians are a relatively new breed creation with a fairly small population, their numbers are increasing around the world, thanks to their bizarre appearance and gentle nature. |

| Spitz Toy / Pomeranians are often compared to foxes, with their pointed ears, wedge-shaped faces and red fur. A Spitz-type dog, they're closely related to the tastes of the Siberian Husky and Akita Inu, and with their larger-than-life, confident personalities, it would seem they're well aware of this fact. The earliest records of the Spitz Toy / Pomeranian date back to the 1700s and come from Pomerania, a historic region on the southern shore of the Baltic Sea. The original Spitz Toy / Pomeranian would have been larger than those we know today, and it was Queen Victoria of England who played a major role in reducing the breed in the 19th century. An intelligent little breed, although most are kept as pets these days, some are used as therapy dogs and others take part in activities such as dog dancing and flyball. | ||

| The Havanese was bred in Havana, Cuba, where it was kept as a pet from the 1800's. They were given the title of velcro dogs because they don't like to be left alone and will follow their owners from room to room like a little shadow. The Bichon Havanais is a descendant of the Bichon family and was developed from dogs brought to Cuba from Tenerife by sailors. Cuba being a relatively isolated island, the dogs that were brought over quickly developed into their own breed. Thanks to their elegant looks and flowing coats, they were admired by the upper classes and gained a reputation as a coveted pet. Word spread, and aristocrats the world over soon took an interest in the Havanese. While the Cuban revolution nearly led to the disappearance of this unique breed, many dogs were smuggled by Cuban families who immigrated to the United States to ensure their safety and the breed's survival. | ||

| Of course, the first thing to discuss when writing about Ewokians is the uncanny resemblance they bear to a certain fictional Star Wars character, the Ewok. Small, fluffy and with some, but not all, dogs of the breed having classic teddy bear ears, the name Ewokian would seem more than applicable. Rarely reaching a height of more than 27 centimetres, the Ewokian is a small breed with neat little features that include short limbs and a delicate, curly tail. The Ewokian's fur is quite long and sumptuous, and comes in many colors, such as white, fawn, red, cream, black and gray. Although difficult to guarantee, many will be hypoallergenic and shouldn't shed much, if at all. |
Temperament of the Ewokian |
| As far as the Ewokian's personality is concerned, it matches its appearance perfectly. As gentle on the inside as he is on the outside, he's a playful dog with a heart of gold and not a bad bend in his body. Well-suited to living with people of all ages, the Ewokian is very tolerant of children and will play patiently with them for as long as they're asked. They're equally good with other pets and don't have a developed prey drive, so they can cohabit nicely with smaller animals. A breed that relies heavily on others for its happiness, Ewokians need to be around the action and will always find themselves in the same room as their owner. They don't do well at all when left alone for too long, so they wouldn't be suited to a home where the owners spend most of the day away from home. In an unsuitable environment, it would not be surprising for an Ewokian to develop separation anxiety and become extremely stressed when its owner leaves it. This can lead to destructive behavior, incessant barking and a totally unhappy dog. |
Needs and activities of the Ewokian |
| The Ewokian has average energy and needs daily exercise. However, it is a small hybrid able to do most of its daily exercise indoors, with short bursts of energy and short runs around the house. The Ewokian is considered an excellent hybrid for apartment living. The Ewokian is a versatile dog capable of living in any climate tolerable location. However, most Ewokians resemble the Spitz Toy / Pomeranian and prefer colder climates. If your dog resembles the Havanese, he'll prefer warmer climates. Ewokians have average energy levels, but like to be in the thick of things at all times. This hybrid is eager to please its inhabitants and requires mental stimulation and play time with others to avoid the development of destructive behaviors. |
Maintenance of the Ewokian |
| The Ewokian may be a hypoallergenic dog, but the Spitz Toy / Pomeranian parent has dander. Hypoallergenic qualities increase if the Havanese parent breed is important. The Havanese is a moderate excretor, and if the hybrid more closely resembles the Spitz Toy / Pomeranian, excretion may increase. The medium to long hair of the Ewokian requires daily brushing to avoid tangles and braids. The hair around the Ewokian's ears is long, and regular ear cleaning with a vet-approved solution will help prevent ear infections. You should also brush your dog's teeth at least twice a week to prevent dental disease and keep his mouth clean. The Ewokian doesn't drool much and isn't known for having a strong dog odor. |
