| This rare breed comes from Calabria, often referred to as the Calabrian Corsican Dog. Compared to the Corsican, it's a heavier, broader dog with a rounder skull than its cousin. The Bucirriscu has been used for a number of functions, such as protecting livestock and property, as well as in combat. Another name for the breed is Butcher Dog, because this dog was used to accompany butchers to markets and guard merchandise. Passages shared with the Italian Cane Corso reduced the number of pure specimens, leading to the disappearance of the Bucciriscu Calabrese. Athletic, intelligent and obedient, these are agile, trainable working dogs. The body is muscular, with strong legs and a powerful neck. Ears and tail are generally left natural. The short, dense coat is generally black, but brindle is popular. A few white patches are acceptable on chest and feet. The average height is around 71 centimeters, but most real-life examples are smaller, usually measuring 64 cm at the withers. |
