The Cypro Kukur is an ancient and rare breed of dog from the Kumaon region of India. Also known as the Kumaon Mastiff, the dog has a history dating back to around 300 BC. The dog is thought to have been brought to the region by Alexander when he invaded. The local population bred the dog as a guard dog. The breed is now in danger of extinction, and very few pure Cypro Kukur remain in the region of its origin. More of the breed is thought to be present in Europe than in its homeland. Cypro Kukur are large dogs with fairly lean, muscular, well-built bodies. It has a large, powerful head and a strong neck. The dog has a short, soft coat that always comes in brindle color, ranging from dark to light shades. It can also have white markings. The average size of these dogs is 71 centimetres. Their appearance has been described as similar to Old Danes. This dog is not recognized by AKC or any other major kennel club.

The coat is short and coarse.

The Cypro Kukur is an aggressive breed of dog that makes an excellent watchdog. Its aggressive character helps keep intruders away and protect the home. The dog is obedient and friendly to its master and family, and gets on well with children, but is unpredictable with strangers. It cannot tolerate other dogs around it. The Cypro Kukur is renowned for its protective, confident temperament, incredible drive and enviable power, but it is notoriously prone to aggression. Consequently, early and consecutive socialization is absolutely imperative, and this breed is ill-suited to the inexperienced or uninitiated.

The Cypro Kukur gets on well with children in the family, but is unpredictable with strangers. They don't do well with other dogs, especially other dominant breeds or dogs of the same sex.

The coat needs very little care.

The Cypro Kukur needs training from a dominant owner. Only experienced dog owners should attempt to train this breed. Puppy training is absolutely essential for this breed of dog due to its aggressive nature. The dog should be trained to obey its owner's commands. Harsh training methods may not work with this dog. The owner should establish himself as a confident and stable pack leader.

This breed is large and needs a yard big enough to accommodate its size.
