General appearance

Small, delicate-looking dog with a straight profile.

Behaviour / temperament

Extremely lively, very nervous, barker. An excellent house guardian, alert at the slightest warning. Great rat and rabbit hunter, very agile and fast.

Skull
The axes of the skull and muzzle are parallel. The frontonasal depression is well-defined and forms a right angle with the axes of the skull and muzzle. The skull is rounded, domed and broad, the muzzle narrow. The masseter muscles are well defined.

Facial region

Small and black.
Muzzle
Less long than the skull.
Lips
Black, adhering well to the gums.
Jaws and teeth
White, healthy, well-established teeth; the upper incisors lie just in front of the lower ones. Palate black.
Eyes
Round, large, slightly prominent and horizontal; dark amber in color; black eyelids adhere well to the eye.
Ears
Straight, large, triangular and high set.

Neck

Cylindrical, short, same length as the head.

Body

Quadrangular in shape in females, square in males. Muscles are firm and visible.
Withers
Not very pronounced, level with the croup.
Loin
Short, strong and straight.
Chest
The chest is ample and rounded. Ribs are oblique. The dorsolumbar line is straight. The belly is very tucked up.

Tail

Cut flush with the coccyx. It is curious to observe that, out of a hundred subjects, some ten or fifteen are born without a tail, and another ten or fifteen with a rudimentary tail, which atrophies and eventually falls off on its own.

Extremely pronounced angulations, favoring vertical jumps at great heights.

Skin

Very fine skin, well adhering to the body. No dewlap.

Coat

Short and fine.
Colour
Mainly black and tan. There is a certain diversity of colors, depending on the proportion of black to tan and the shade of fawn, which can be cinnamon. White may also be present in varying proportions, from a small star on the chest to an almost entirely white coat (with black and tan only on the head). It can also be brown and tan, but this is not very common.

Size and weight

Height at withers
Height at the withers is 38 cm for the male and 33 cm for the female.
Male length is less than height; female length is equal to or slightly greater than height.
Weight
Between 6 and 8 kg.

Faults

• Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog and its ability to perform its traditional work.
• Faults listed should be in degree of seriousness.

NB :

• Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioural abnormalities shall be disqualified.
• The above mentioned faults when occurring to a highly marked degree or frequently are disqualifying.
• Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
• Only functionally and clinically healthy dogs, with breed typical conformation should be used for breeding.
