Svensk Vit Älghund

The White Swedish Elkhound is a sturdy, medium-sized Spitz breed developed in Sweden for hunting big game such as moose, bear, and lynx. Recognizable by their pure white coat, erect ears, and curled tail, these highly energetic dogs are intelligent and loyal; they require active owners with plenty of space. The White Swedish Elkhound (*Svensk vit älghund*) is a hardy hunting dog capable of thriving in various environments, including cold climates. With a solid, robust build, the breed demonstrates great endurance when hunting big game. Originally bred to hunt large animals like moose and bear, this dog is incredibly versatile. Despite its hunting background, it is gentle and affectionate with its family; it generally gets along well with children and other pets when properly socialized.

This breed has high energy levels and requires plenty of physical and mental stimulation. The White Swedish Elkhound and the (Grey) Swedish Elkhound are two distinct, officially recognized breeds, although they are closely related. The White Swedish Elkhound is known for its intelligence, loyalty, and versatility. Possessing a strong hunting instinct, it was bred to work independently, making it a determined and focused dog. Despite its hunting heritage, it tends to be gentle and affectionate with its family. However, early socialization and training are essential to ensure it gets along well with other animals and strangers. Its intelligence and ability to learn quickly make training easier, but its independent nature requires a firm and consistent hand. Finally, it needs plenty of physical and mental stimulation to prevent boredom, as a bored White Swedish Elkhound can engage in destructive behavior.
