A brief presentation of the Aussiedor
The Aussiedor is a hybrid breed where the Australian Shepherd is crossed with the Labrador Retriever. Known for being fluffy, intelligent and playful, the Aussiedor is a large, solid dog with a broad face and hanging ears that can be seen in a variety of colors. Popular for being gentle and loving, the Aussiedor does well with children of all ages when trained and often forms strong bonds with family members. The Aussiedor is an active hybrid that will require significant activity to ensure its overall health.

History of the Aussiedor
The hybrid Aussiedor is a new breed of dog with no detailed history. However, the two breeds that combine to make the Aussiedor have a long history.
        

A little of the Australian Shepherd

         
The Australian Shepherd was developed in the USA to work as a sheepdog. It's likely that the name Australian Shepherd is due to the fact that the dog's ancestors came to the USA from Australia, and those who worked the dogs named them after their ancestors' place of residence. The breed's popularity increased in the 1950s after the dog was featured in rodeos and films. The Australian Shepherd now works as a ranch dog, guide dog, therapy dog, drug detection dog and in search and rescue.

A little of the Labrador Retriever
The Labrador Retriever originated in Newfoundland, an offshoot of the original Newfoundland breed. The original Labrador Retrievers were black and medium-sized, and successfully retrieved game. As good swimmers, they performed well in the icy waters of their home, often swimming after fishing nets and pulling small boats through the water. Although the breed died out in Newfoundland, partly due to a heavy tax on the dogs, many had been taken to England by the early 1800s and the breed continued to evolve from these dogs. The Labrador Retriever was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1917. As a breed, the Labrador Retriever is strong in drug detection and works as a service animal.

Appearance of the Aussiedor
The Aussiedor is a hybrid of the Australian Shepherd and Labrador Retriever, averaging 18 to 38 kilos in weight and 63.5 centimeters in height. The Aussiedor is large and solid, with a broad face and relatively broad head. Its hanging ears are medium to large, and its tail is a little long. Hybrid dogs can have coats of many colors to include black and brown, black, light brown - golden, dark brown - chocolate, tricolor or spotted - merle - brindle - spotted. The Aussiedor's coat can be straight or somewhat wavy, but is generally dense and able to repel water.

Temperament of the Aussiedor
The Aussiedor is known for being kind, loyal, gentle and friendly to those it knows, probably forming close bonds with certain family members. A dog of this breed will tend to cling to its owners, which can lead to a feeling of neglect when left alone at home. The Aussiedor protects its home and can be cautious with strangers, sometimes alerting their owners to signs of danger. As the breed originates from hunting dogs, an Aussiedor may consider small children as part of its herd and may try to herd them. As the offspring of two intelligent breeds, the Aussiedor will quickly learn not to chase or kill children, and will eventually get on well with them. Hybrid dogs are easy to train and make good pets.

Needs and activities of the Aussiedor
The Aussiedor is an active dog that requires both exercise and mental stimulation. A dog of this hybrid can do well in an apartment or at home as long as it's taken out for exercise, a good walk, swimming or active play on a daily basis. If this is not possible, the Aussiedor should have a fenced-in yard where he can safely run around and expend his energy. It's important to keep your Aussiedor busy, otherwise your dog can become destructive. Activities such as working, running, playing, swimming, fetching and catching a Frisbee will help your Aussiedor with his physical and mental health. The Aussiedor is considered easy to train, so training should start as soon as your dog gets home. Socialization is also important to ensure that your Aussiedor is at ease with other people and animals.

Maintenance of the Aussiedor
The maintenance of your Aussiedor will be moderate, requiring regular grooming to ensure a healthy coat. Thought of as a medium excretor as are both parent breeds, regular brushing, at least once a week, will be necessary for your Aussiedor. Using a conditioner designed for dogs can help detangle your Aussiedor's coat before you start brushing. With regular brushing, your dog probably won't need more than a few baths a year. The basic care that's necessary for all dogs is also important, including trimming his nails if necessary and keeping his ears clean and dry. In addition, you'll want to brush his teeth regularly to ensure his overall dental health.
