A brief presentation of the Affenhuahua |
| The Affenhuahua is a designer toy dog breed from the United States. The result of a cross between the Affenpinscher and the Chihuahua, this particular little toy dog breed is a scruffy dog with a relatively short stature. Its muzzle and nose tend to be short, but it is not a true brachycephalic dog. Affenpinschers can be bred to have two main coat shades: dark gray and black with darker shades of brown. The Affenpinscher is reputed to be a lively, alert and playful companion for the good home. However, as with all breeds, training is essential, especially for homes with young children. Bred to be a companion breed, these little toy dogs have moderate grooming needs. Derived in part from the Chihuahua, the Affenhuahua can have a long or short coat, and is said to be hypoallergenic. |
History of the Affenhuahua |
| The name Affenhuahua comes from the combination of the related breeds Chihuahua and Affenpinscher. The AKC does not yet recognize its offspring, the Affenhuahua, as a registered breed. As far as the Affenhuahua is concerned, the exact date of its origin is unknown, but it can be estimated that it began to appear during the 21st century in the United States of America. The actual reason for the breed's creation may simply be aesthetic. |

| The Affenpinscher, one of the two dog breeds used to create the Affenhuahua, originated in Germany. We don't know when these dogs first appeared, but we do know that they were used as farm dogs and also as ratter dogs. It was in the 18th and 19th centuries that the Affenpinscher began to be regarded as a pet. Today, Affenpinschers are still wonderful pets, but they are still in touch with their hunting side and can be good at rat hunting, as well as being modern guard dogs. | ||

| The Chihuahua is the smallest and one of the oldest dog breeds known. Its origins are debated, but it is generally accepted that Chihuahuas were present in Mexico as early as the 9th century AD. The same theory traces the breed back to its presumed predecessor, the "Techichi", a small dog first domesticated by the Toltecs, a Mesoamerican civilization. The Toltecs may have crossed the Techichi with a breed of dog that lived in the Chihuahua mountains, called the Perro Chihuahueno. When the Aztecs conquered the region, they embraced the Techichi, using the dog in spiritual ceremonies. When explorers arrived in South America from Western Europe, the Techichi was bred with other small dogs to produce the Chihuahua we know today. The Chihuahua became popular in North America from the late 1800s to the early 1900s and was registered by the American Kennel Club in 1904. | ||

Appearance of the Affenhuahua |
| The Affenpinscher is described as a monkey-faced Terrier. When you look at an Affenhuahua, you can see its monkey face thanks to certain facial features such as a rounded, scruffy face, shortened muzzle, large round eyes and semi-flexible ears. The Affenhuahua is small and has a long, crescent-shaped tail. Coat color can vary from dark browns, blacks, bronzes, blues and whites. The coat can be of medium length and is often rough and dense to the touch. |
Temperament of the Affenhuahua |
| Due to its mix of breeds, the Affenhuahua can be an intelligent, hyperactive little dog. Like the Chihuahua, the Affenhuahua is a curious dog that can tend to be stubborn and misbehave. But as with all dogs, training is essential, especially if the dog is going to be around young children. Training is often quite easy for new owners, as these lively little dogs learn quickly and are full of energy, especially as puppies. When approached by strangers and/or children, the Affenhuahua can be either fearful or lively, depending on its personality. That's why it's important not only to socialize the dog, but also to teach children how to approach a dog properly. As with all animals, each dog develops its own personality and temperament. |
Needs and activities of the Affenhuahua |
| Chihuahuas have times of the day when they can be full of energy. Affenpinschers can be less energetic; however, due to their history as a rat-hunting breed, their energy levels can be moderate. Affenhuahuas tend to have moderate energy levels, requiring short periods of play and exercise. Toys and learning new tricks are recommended to provide adequate mental stimulation and entertainment for your dog, especially during the puppy phases. |
Maintenance of the Affenhuahua |
| The Affenhuahua is a hypoallergenic breed that sheds very little and tends to have a medium-length coat that is often quite dense and rough to the touch, requiring regular grooming and brushing to prevent matting. If your Affenhuahua adopts similar characteristics to an Affenpinscher, detangling and clipping the coat may be another regular grooming requirement. As with all dogs, dental care and nail trimming are essential to maintaining your pet's health. However, if your Affenhuahua has particularly soft ears, regular ear cleaning may also be necessary. |
