The Blanquito de la Habana is an extinct dog breed of the Bichon type that was once found on the island of Cuba. The origins of the Bichons used to create this breed are a subject of debate. Some experts claim that their ancestors were introduced by the Spanish, while others maintain that they were brought by the Italians. The Spanish are believed to have arrived with the Bichon Tenerife—the most likely ancestor of the modern Bichon Frisé—whereas the Italians are thought to have brought either the Bolognese or the Maltese. The Blanquito de la Habana remained popular in Cuba until the 19th century, when crossbreeding with Poodles transformed the breed, giving rise to the modern Havanese. |
