The name "Black and Tan Terrier" appears frequently in the lineages of most Terriers. These prolific dogs seem to have been used to create almost every Terrier breed worldwide. Surprisingly, "Black and Tan" refers more to a coat type than to a distinct breed in its own right. Often classified among the *Fell Terriers*, these long-legged dogs were developed in the United Kingdom for fox hunting.

In the 1880s, a group of enterprising English breeders applied the name "Old English Broken-Haired Black and Tan Terrier" to wire-haired, black-and-tan working Terriers. They claimed that these dogs represented the "original stock" of all British Terriers. Many were first- or second-generation dogs, selected from litters based on their markings.

The Welsh, who also possessed dogs of a similar type, responded by producing the Black and Tan Welsh Terrier. By the early 20th century, the Black and Tan Terrier had vanished, though not without having spawned several modern breeds—at least on paper. According to some authors, the Welsh Terrier is one of these.
