The Basset d’Artois was a basset-type hound belonging to the Chien d’Artois family. The origins of this type of dog remain uncertain; some have suggested it descended from other short-legged breeds, such as the Dachshund or the Corgi. Other experts believe that the first bassets originated from hounds affected by dwarfism. This latter theory is the most widely accepted, although the exact origin remains a subject of debate: was it a phenomenon that occurred repeatedly, or simply the result of crossbreeding between various breeds and existing bassets?

In the early 20th century, local breeders merged the Basset d’Artois and the Basset Normand to create a single breed: the Basset Artésien Normand. These two dogs were said to be so similar that the only difference between them lay in the shape of their legs: straight in the Basset d’Artois and crooked in the Basset Normand.
